The very first Proof American Silver Eagles were struck in 1986 by the San Francisco Mint with an S mint mark. Over the last four decades, San Francisco has contributed to the production of Proof Silver Eagles on an irregular basis, with steadier releases of S-Proof Silver Eagles over the last decade. However, the US Mint has announced that the 2025-S Proof Silver Eagle is the last planned release of the coins from the San Francisco Mint. Each 2025-S 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coin comes with a plastic capsule and is housed in a US Mint presentation box. The coin is housed in a Walking Liberty-themed outer shipper and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Each coin has frosted devices and mirrored background fields. Only 110,000 coins will be issued by the San Francisco Mint with individual packaging.
The San Francisco Mint was established in 1854 as a direct response to the California Gold Rush, which began in 1848 and brought an unprecedented influx of gold to the region. The federal government recognized the urgent need for a local facility to convert raw gold into standardized coinage, as transporting gold across the continent to existing mints was both dangerous and expensive. Congress authorized the creation of the San Francisco branch mint on July 3, 1852, with construction beginning in 1854 on a site at the corner of Commercial and Montgomery Streets in downtown San Francisco.
The obverse of the 2025-S Proof American Silver Eagle comes with the iconic image of Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this visual shows Liberty’s full-length figure in left-profile relief. She is shown walking toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure and her right hand extended toward the horizon.
On the reverse of 2025-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle Coins, you will find an image of the American bald eagle. The bald eagle design from Emily Damstra shows the aerial predator in flight with its wings flexed above its frame as its extended talons clutch a large oak branch. This design debuted on the coins in mid-2021.
