The 2025 Somalian Elephants are in! We can now offer these high-purity coins in a variety of sizes and metals, each bearing its iconic signature design feature.
This year’s issue is the 22nd in the series. However, they are something of a misnomer, as they are neither issued by a Somalian mint nor considered legal tender in the country. Instead, these coins are produced by the Bavarian State Mint, the sovereign mint of Germany, which mints the coins on behalf of the country in a sort of semi-official arrangement. Here are the highlights about this latest release:
This year’s edition marks the 22nd issue of the Somalian Elephant series. The Bavarian State Mint first issued these pieces in 2004 on behalf of the nation of Somalia. However, the actual African Wildlife series began five years earlier. The Bavarian State Mint initially minted coins on behalf of Zambia, but only as 1 oz silver pieces. The Somali versions represent the bulk of the series.
The Bavarian State Mint hasn’t skimped on quality, regardless of the size of the coin. Both the gold and silver editions of the Somali Elephant are minted to be .9999 fine, the highest commercially available purity level for coins. In fact, minting in .9999 pure silver places the Somali Elephant higher than most similar silver bullion coins.
The obverse of the Somali Elephant features the coat of arms of Somalia — a shield with a star flanked by two heraldic lions. The words “Somali Republic” adorn the top of the coin, along with a split year of issue and the coin’s Somali face value. This last bit is somewhat ironic, as Somali Elephants are not considered legal tender by the Republic of Somalia.
The reverse of the Somalian Elephant depicts its namesake creature. An African bush elephant strides confidently forward through the African savanna beneath the sun. Each feature of the animal and the surrounding landscape is rendered in explicit detail.
These coins are available in a wider variety of denominations than bullion coins usually offer. For the gold coins, there are standard versions in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz sizes, but you can also find them in 1/25 oz, 1/50 oz, or even the tiny 1/2 gram sizes if you need a budget option. The silver Somali Elephants are available in 1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, or a massive 1 kg form. There are also some colorized versions of the silver coins, including a beautiful blue and red snowglobe coin.
