The 2025 Australian Lunar coins are in stock and ready to shop. This year’s entry features snake imagery, as 2025 is, indeed, the Year of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac (Shengxiao).
The Perth Mint is in its third cycle of this coin series. As is its custom, the mint issues its Lunar series in both gold and silver and offers it in a wide variety of sizes and finishes. Here are some of the relevant details about this new edition of coins:
The 2025 Australian Lunar Snake is the sixth and latest edition of the Perth Mint’s coin series that draws its inspiration from the Shengxiao, or Chinese Zodiac. This issue is the third to honor the Year of the Snake.
The obverse of every Australian Lunar features Dan Thorne’s engraving of King Charles III, the sitting monarch of Great Britain. British royals — either Charles or his mother Queen Elizabeth II — have appeared on the obverse of Lunars as a nod to Australia’s colonial past.
The reverse you’ll receive on the 2025 Lunar depends on the metal you choose for your purchase. Gold coin buyers will see a snake weaving its way through a stand of bamboo, while silver enthusiasts will find a snake coiled and facing forward, as if considering the buyer’s intentions for them.
In either case, you’ll get a coin minted to be .9999 pure. The purity of the gold Australian Lunar Snake version places this coin in the stead of other similar high-purity bullion coins, both from the Perth Mint and from other sovereign mints around the world.
The silver Lunar Snake coin offers an even higher purity than most similar bullion coins. Though the extra digit of fineness is mostly academic, it is nonetheless an indicator of the extremely high quality that the Perth Mint imparts to its products.
There is a great deal of variety in terms of sizing when it comes to the 2025 Lunar Snake. Gold Lunars can be found as small as 1/20 oz and as large as 10 oz. Silver Lunars don’t come in fractional sizes so much as they come in whole numbers — you can buy coins as large as 1 kilo of the white metal.
The Perth Mint also offers colorized versions of these coins, especially in the silver versions. The snake is available with either turquoise or gold detail on several sizes of the silver, and you can even get the brilliant blue-green shade on some of the smaller gold coins.
