The 2025 Australian Koalas have arrived. Although the Kangaroo and Lunar coins get the bulk of the attention, these beautiful coins portray one of the most recognizable and beloved animals from Australia in vivid detail.
Like their more famous brethren, Australian Koalas are minted with .9999 fine silver. With this year’s release, the Perth Mint is now celebrating the 19th year of offering a numismatic tribute to one of the cuddliest mammals on the planet. Here are some of the high points related to these coins:
The Australian Koalas have been issued by the Perth Mint since 2007. They serve as a limited-release complement to the silver Lunars and Kangaroos, which are released in much wider numbers each year.
The obverse of the 2025 Silver Koala features Dan Thorne’s engraving of King Charles III, which he created in 2022 in the wake of the death of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The British monarch appears as a nod to Australia’s origins as a colony of the United Kingdom. The image of King Charles on the coin is identical to the one that appears on the Lunar and the Kangaroo.
The reverse of the silver coin depicts a koala bear hugging a gum tree branch. The furry critter, a product of designer Aleysha Howarth, seems to be at complete rest and even appears to have a slight smile on its face. The reverse is finished out with an engraving of the mintage year, weight, and purity of the coin.
These coins are available in two denominations. One of them is the customary 1 oz silver coin and we also carry a 2025 1 kilo Koala coin.

The special edition is capped off by the inclusion of a colorized card that honors the Australasian Numismatic Dealers Association (ANDA)’s Brisbane Expo, which took place in April 2025.
