In 2025, the United States Mint produced its final circulation pennies, marking the conclusion of more than two centuries of continuous production for the nation’s longest-running coin denomination. To commemorate this milestone, the US Mint released a special Omega issue of US pennies. This three-coin set recognizes the conclusion of the series while also representing one of the lowest-mintage penny sets ever issued. Today, 2025 3-Coin Omega-Privy Pennies Lot #55 is available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The US penny holds a distinct place in American numismatic history. First introduced in 1793, it remains the longest-running denomination in U.S. coinage. Early pennies were large copper coins, nearly the size of a modern half dollar, and featured a depiction of Lady Liberty with flowing hair. Over time, the design transitioned through multiple Liberty motifs until 1909, when President Theodore Roosevelt introduced a new design honoring Abraham Lincoln on the centennial of his birth. This marked the first time a real historical figure appeared on a regularly issued U.S. coin, replacing the longstanding use of symbolic imagery.
The 2025 3-Coin Omega-Privy Pennies Lot #55 includes individual slabs for each coin in the set. The collection features two standard circulation pennies, one from the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark) and one from the Denver Mint (D mint mark). The third coin is a 24-karat gold penny struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This release represents the first-ever gold penny issued by the United States Mint and is among the rarest non-proof gold coins in its catalog. The set has a limited mintage of just 232 pieces, reflecting the 232-year production span of the US penny from 1793 through 2025.
Within this set, each coin has been certified with different grades and designations. The 24-karat gold penny is a near-perfect Mint State 69 specimen, with full, original luster and a maximum of two minuscule flaws. The Philadelphia-issued penny earned a Mint State 64 grade, while the Denver-issued penny has a Mint State 65 grade. Both circulation copper pennies have RD designations, indicating no less than 95% of the original reddish luster to the copper remains present on both coins.
On the obverse of each coin is the familiar right-profile portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. This design also includes an Omega privy mark, symbolizing the conclusion of the denomination. As the final letter of the Greek alphabet, Omega serves as an appropriate marker for the end of this series in American coinage.
The reverse of the 2025 Omega-Privy Penny features the Union Shield design, which has been used since 2010. This design replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse that appeared on pennies from 1959 through 2008.
