Coin Highlights:
The Cusabo were a collection of small Native American tribes who inhabited the coastal regions of present-day South Carolina during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were composed of several groups including the Edisto, Kiawah, Stono, and Wando peoples, who shared similar cultural practices and linguistic ties. These tribes were primarily coastal dwellers who developed sophisticated fishing techniques and relied heavily on marine resources, supplementing their diet with agriculture and hunting.

The name Chicora is engraved on this side of the coin. Chicora was a region that held great significance for indigenous peoples in what is now the South Carolina Lowcountry. The name itself comes from a Native American word, and the area roughly corresponded to the coastal region around present-day Charleston.

Here, you’ll find the head of an American bald eagle in left-profile relief set inside an eight-pointed star. Around the outside of the star, you’ll find arrowheads between each of the eight points.
