Written in alliterative verse, the poem follows the legendary Geatish warrior Beowulf, who epitomizes the Germanic heroic ideal through his unmatched bravery, unwavering loyalty, and extraordinary strength. As a young warrior, Beowulf journeys to Denmark to aid King Hrothgar, whose grand mead-hall, Heorot, has been plagued by the monstrous Grendel.
The obverse of the 2025 British Silver Beowulf and the Dragon Coin comes with a depiction of King Charles III. Designed in late 2022 by Martin Jennings, this is the first-generation bust of Charles III for British currency and it depicts the King in left-profile relief without a crown on his head.
On the reverse of 2025 1 oz Silver Beowulf and the Dragon Coins, the mint offers a depiction of an aged Beowulf battling a dragon. In his final great test, the now-aged King Beowulf confronts a fearsome dragon that has begun ravaging his kingdom after a thief steals a valuable cup from its hoard. Though his years have caught up with him, Beowulf refuses to back down, determined to face the creature alone—just as he did in his youth. However, this battle proves to be his most challenging, as the dragon’s fiery breath and venomous attacks present a far greater threat than any foe he has faced before.
