The female personification of Britain, Britannia’s effigy was created for this series in 1987 by Philip Nathan. Her figure is shown in full-length relief with a Corinthian helmet on her head, a trident in one hand, and an olive branch in her other hand as it rests on a Union Jack shield.
In recent years, The Royal Mint has added four distinct security features to the design of its Britannia coins. The most obvious are the motion texture wave lines in the background behind Britannia, as well as the latent security mark with a trident head. The reverse field also includes micro text around Britannia’s portrait and tincture lines on the Union Jack flag.
