Featuring a nominal value of 1 Bayern Thaler, the rounds feature a design on the obverse celebrating one of the most iconic structures in Bavaria, the Neischwanstein Castle. The Neuschwanstein Castle, perched majestically on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, Germany, is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace commissioned by King Ludwig II. Often called the “fairy tale castle,” it served as inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and draws over 1.5 million visitors annually who come to marvel at its picturesque towers, ornate interior, and stunning Alpine setting.
On the reverse of the 2025 Bavarian State Mint Bayern Thaler Round, you’ll find the coat of arms of the Free State of Bavaria. The central and largest section displays the famous blue and white lozenge pattern (diamond shapes) that has been associated with Bavaria since the 13th century. The shield is crowned and supported by heraldic eagles on both sides.

King Ludwig II, known as the “Swan King” or “Mad King Ludwig,” designed the castle as a personal retreat and homage to Richard Wagner, with many rooms themed after Wagner’s operas.
