These coins are individually packaged in protective plastic flips and feature a reverse design honoring the Spanish coins that were modified in 1800 to serve as the first currency minted in Australia.

Prior to Governor King’s proclamation, New South Wales faced severe monetary chaos, with various foreign coins circulating at arbitrary and inconsistent values. King’s proclamation fixed the values of several foreign coins that were commonly used in the colony, including British, Dutch, Indian, and Spanish currencies, effectively creating Australia’s first formal monetary system out of necessity.
