Although the eagle became America’s national symbol following the American Revolution, the decision was not without debate—Benjamin Franklin famously suggested the wild turkey as a more suitable emblem, criticizing the eagle for its scavenger behavior. Regardless, the bald eagle’s regal appearance and graceful flight came to symbolize the nation’s independence and strength.
