Augustus Saint-Gaudens' entry into coin design came at the direct request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who sought to elevate American coinage to the artistic standards of ancient Greek coins. Despite having no previous experience in coin design, Saint-Gaudens brought his monumental sculptural aesthetic to the challenging medium of bas-relief coin artwork. His work on American coinage began in 1905 but was sadly cut short by his death in 1907, making his numismatic legacy relatively brief but incredibly influential.
The obverse of 2025 American Gold Eagle Coins includes a portrait of Lady Liberty. This iconic work of art from Saint-Gaudens was created for the $20 Double Eagle and showcases the full-length figure of Liberty striding toward the viewer. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse of 2025 1 oz Gold Eagle Coins is the mint’s modern image of the bald eagle courtesy of artist Jennie Norris. Introduced in mid-2021, it offers a left-profile relief of the eagle’s head with intricate levels of detail in its plumage and overall appearance.
