American Gold Buffalos are the only 24-karat gold coins the United States Mint issues on an annual basis. Introduced in 2006, the Gold Buffalo Coin features the same designs James Earle Fraser created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel.
The obverse of the 2025 American Gold Buffalo comes with a depiction of an indigenous figure. Fraser’s portrait is an amalgamation of the physical features of three real-world indigenous leaders from the early 20th century. The figure shown here is in right-profile relief and has a stoic look.
On the reverse of 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins is the mighty American bison. Fraser used Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, as inspiration for his design. The bison is shown in left-profile relief standing a small mound of earth as it grazes.
