The Silver Libertad bullion program from the Mexican Mint was introduced in 1982 with the release of the 1 oz silver BU coin. A 1 oz proof silver coin was added to the series in 1983. Regular production of Proof Silver Libertads began in 1986, and over time, the collection expanded to include additional fractional sizes and larger weights beyond the original 1 oz format. Coin Highlights:
Mexico’s revolutionary era saw more changes to its coat of arms. The 1821 Plan of Iguala and subsequent Mexican Empire under Agustín de Iturbide created new versions that attempted to balance indigenous heritage with the realities of creating a modern nation-state. These early independence-era versions often featured the eagle with a crown, reflecting the brief imperial period, but the republican movements that followed increasingly emphasized the eagle’s connection to pre-Columbian Mexico.
All 2025 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins come with a protective acrylic capsule and offer traditional proof visuals. The typical proof coin has frosted design elements and mirrored background fields. Like the other fractional-ounce coins, the 1/4 oz Proof Silver Libertad debuted in 1992 and has been issued annually, except for 2012.
On the obverse of the 2025 Proof Mexican Silver Libertads, you will find the current depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. This image portrays a golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus engaged in a struggle with a serpent. On the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz silver coins, the primary emblem is surrounded by 10 historical versions of the national seal. These fractional-ounce coins only feature the modern coat of arms.
The reverse of the 2025 1/4 oz Proof Silver Libertad Coins features the Winged Victory design. This artwork shows the famous statue standing atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column, set against a backdrop that includes the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
