Silver Libertad bullion coins made their debut in 1982 with the release of a 1 oz silver BU coin from the Mexican Mint. A 1 oz proof version followed in 1983. Since 1986, Proof Silver Libertads have been issued annually, with additional coin sizes, ranging from fractional weights to those above 1 oz, added in the 1990s and early 2000s. The modern national coat of arms is the culmination of nearly 500 years of indigenous and Mexican history. The eagle appears without a crown, emphasizing Mexico’s republican character, while the cactus is clearly identified as prickly pear, and the serpent is depicted as a rattlesnake, both native to Mexican territory. The addition of oak and laurel branches represents strength and glory, connecting Mexico to classical republican traditions.
The obverse of the 2025 Proof Mexican Silver Libertads displays the modern Mexican coat of arms. At its center is an image of a golden eagle standing on a prickly pear cactus while grasping a serpent. For the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz versions, this image is enhanced by a surrounding ring of 10 previous designs used for the national coat of arms.
On the reverse of each 2025 1/20 oz Proof Silver Libertad Coin is the image of Winged Victory. The design shows the statue as it appears atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column, with the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl visible in the background.
