Introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1982, the Silver Libertad bullion series debuted with the release of a 1 oz silver BU coin. In 1983, the collection expanded to include a 1 oz proof silver version. Starting in 1986, Proof Silver Libertads were issued annually, and during the following decades, new sizes, both smaller and larger than 1 oz, were added to the lineup. Mexico’s coat of arms features on all Mexican Libertad coins. The Mexican independence movement of the early 19th century marked a crucial turning point in the evolution of the coat of arms, as revolutionary leaders sought to reclaim pre-Columbian symbols while rejecting colonial interpretations. Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos both used versions of the eagle and serpent on their banners, but stripped of Spanish royal symbols and Christian overlay.
The 2025 Proof Mexican Silver Libertads feature the modern version of the Mexican coat of arms on the obverse. This design includes a powerful golden eagle grasping a serpent in its beak and talons while standing on a prickly pear cactus. On the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz silver coins, this design is encircled by 10 historic iterations of the national emblem. These fractional-ounce coins showcase only the modern seal at the center.
Featured on the reverse of the 2025 1/2 oz Proof Silver Libertad Coins is the classic image of Winged Victory. This statue is depicted at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column, with the volcanic mountains Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl shown in the background.
