In the obverse design of 2025 1/2 oz Gold Maltese Cross Coins, you will find the seal of the Central Bank of Malta. This design includes a shield at the center supported by knights on either side. There are Maltese crosses on each side of the design element, with radial lines filling the background field.
For the reverse side of 2025 Malta Gold Maltese Cross Coin, the mint features the iconic Maltese Cross. The eight-pointed cross design emerged as their distinctive symbol during the First Crusade, with each point representing the eight obligations or beatitudes the knights pledged to uphold: loyalty, piety, frankness, bravery, glory and honor, contempt of death, helpfulness toward the poor and sick, and respect for the church.
After being driven from Jerusalem and subsequently from Rhodes, the Knights established their headquarters on Malta in 1530, where the symbol became so closely associated with the island that it gained its common name. During their 268-year rule of Malta, the cross adorned buildings, fortifications, and coins, becoming integral to Maltese cultural identity.
