The creation of Saint-Gaudens’ original Liberty design involved multiple iterations and modifications to make it suitable for production. The initial ultra-high relief versions required up to eleven strikes to fully bring up the design, making them impractical for regular minting. The compromises made to reduce the relief, while maintaining the artistic integrity of the design, resulted in a coin that still managed to capture Saint-Gaudens' original vision while being practical to produce.
The obverse side of 2025 American Gold Eagles features the famous Liberty design by Saint-Gaudens. In this artwork, Liberty strides forward confidently, holding a torch and olive branch as the sun’s rays radiate in the background. The U.S. Capitol Building is depicted in the lower part of the scene.
The reverse side of the 2025 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coin features Jennie Norris’ depiction of the American bald eagle. This design, first introduced in 2021, captures a highly detailed, left-profile view of the eagle’s head with its piercing gaze and textured feathers.
