The Buffalo Nickel was the inspiration for the designs of the Gold Buffalo. The Buffalo Nickel, officially known as the Indian Head Nickel, was designed by American sculptor James Earle Fraser. It was minted by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. The coin featured a Native American chief on the obverse (front) side and a buffalo (American bison) on the reverse (back) side.
