The Peace Silver Dollar was a silver coin minted by the United States from 1921 to 1935. It was designed by sculpted Anthony de Francisci and was meant to commemorate the peace following World War I. The first year of issue for the Peace Dollar, 1921, also happened to be the final issue of the Morgan Dollar. In 2021, the United States marked the centennial of these two final silver dollar designs by reintroducing both designs as modern silver bullion coins. An American bald eagle is featured in the reverse field of 2024-S Proof Peace Dollar Coins. Also designed by de Francisci, this image reflects the nation’s desire for peace following the horrors of World War I. The design shows an eagle perched on a rock ledge clutching an olive branch. Its wings rest at its side as rays of light from the sun emanate from the horizon.
The original Peace Dollar was minted in response to the discontinuation of the popular Morgan Silver Dollar, which had been struck from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. The Peace Dollar was intended to represent the country’s return to peacetime conditions after the war, and its design was meant to symbolize the ideals of peace and unity. Despite its symbolic significance, the Peace Dollar was minted in relatively low numbers compared to the Morgan Dollar, and it is considered a less common and more valuable collector’s item today.
