The Perth Mint was originally established in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint to refine gold from the newly discovered deposits in Western Australia during the gold rush era. It was the last of three operative branch mints of the British Empire, the others being in Sydney and Melbourne.

A naked rider is depicted on horseback in the reverse design of 2024 Proof Australian Gold 125th Anniversary Sovereign Coins. This design is a modern take on the historic images of St. George riding on horseback as he slays a dragon. The new design features a rider with a sword attacking the dragon.
