Introduced in 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollar is the youngest circulation coin design currently in use in the United States. The largest regularly struck denomination, the Kennedy Half Dollar is popular with private mints as a piece that can be used to create collectible coins through the addition of enhancements like ruthenium plating and gold applications. Today, 2024-P JFK Black Ruthenium Half Dollar Gold Clad Coins are available from JM Bullion.

The JFK Half Dollar was released in March 1964, just four months after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963. The coin has a unique history in that its two designers both served, at different points, as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Gilroy Roberts served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1948 to 1964. As Chief Engraver, he was responsible for overseeing the design and production of coins, medals, and other numismatic items issued by the Mint during that period, including the JFK Half Dollar.
All 2024-P JFK Black Ruthenium Half Dollar Coins available here come in plastic capsules and include a Certificate of Authenticity. These legal tender coins have a layer of black ruthenium covering both sides, with 24-karat gold plating on Kennedy’s bust and the eagle on the reverse.
On the obverse of 2024-P JFK Half Dollar Coins, you’ll find Roberts’ depiction of President John F. Kennedy. Roberts used a modified version of a Kennedy portrait he had previously designed for the Presidential Medal Series during Kennedy’s administration.
The reverse side of 2024 JFK Black Ruthenium Half Dollars comes with a depiction of the presidential seal. Designed by Frank Gasparro, a future Chief Engraver at the US Mint, the image shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief looking to the olive branch in its right talon as its left clutches the arrows of war.
