The modern Morgan Silver Dollar is a commemorative coin that honors the legacy of its historic circulation counterpart. The United States Mint introduced the bullion Morgan Dollar in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of the final Morgan Dollar strike for circulation back in 1921. The Early Release designation is for coins that were received for grading within 30 days of issue by the mint.
Morgan Silver Dollars were last struck in 1921 as the US Mint resumed silver dollar coining. The last silver dollar the mint issued was the 1904 Morgan Dollar. No more were produced throughout the 1910s and World War I. After the war, the decision was made to restart silver dollar coining with a new design. Until a new design could be developed, the mint resumed coining with the Morgan Dollar design from January to mid-December 1921.
For the obverse of the 2024 Morgan Dollar Coin, the mint features George T. Morgan’s original bust of Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty with a coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair while a Phrygian cap rests at the back of her head.
In the reverse side of 2024 Morgan Silver Dollars, you will find another image from Morgan. This design depicts the bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread wide to the sides. The talons of the eagle clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
