The Morgan Silver Dollar was originally issued by the United States Mint in the 19th and 20th centuries as a circulation silver dollar. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, the coin’s popular design from George T. Morgan returned in 2021. The introduction of the original Morgan Dollars in 1878 marked the end of a five-year hiatus in silver dollar coining in the United States. The previous Seated Liberty Silver Dollar was halted in 1873 following legislation from Congress that ended the free coining of silver in the United States.
George T. Morgan, then an assistant engraver at the United States Mint, created the obverse and reverse designs of the Morgan Dollar. His images featured on the coins annually from 1878 to 1904, and reappeared in 1921 as the US ended yet another silver dollar coining hiatus. The Morgan Dollar was struck through December 1921 while the US Mint sought a new design for the silver dollar to replace the Morgan visuals.
Obverse design elements on the 2024 Morgan Silver Dollars include a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap on the back of her head with the coronet crown and laurel wreath also on her head.
Reverse visuals on 2024 Morgan Dollar Coins feature the American bald eagle. This unique version of the heraldic eagle was created by Morgan and shows the bald eagle with flexed wings in front-facing relief. It clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
These 2024 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are Mint State 70 specimens. Known as perfect coins, each one has full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws. As Advanced Release specimens, the NGC confirms these coins were originally purchased by designated mint customers before the public release of the coins.
