The 2024 release of the Great Britain Gold Sovereign marks just the second year that King Charles III has featured on the Gold Sovereign. He is just the second monarch in the last 70 years to grace the Sovereign from the Royal Mint. This release also marks the first to feature the standard portrait of Charles III from Martin Jennings. Charles III’s debut on the 2023 Sovereign featured a special Coronation design with a crown on Charles III’s head.
The obverse of the 2024 Gold Sovereign Coin features Martin Jenning’s left-profile bust of King Charles III. His Majesty is depicted in the opposing relief to his predecessor, a common tradition for British coinage. Similarly, like other male monarchs before him, Charles III is shown without a crown.
On the reverse of 2024 Great Britain Sovereigns is the iconic image of St. George slaying the dragon. This image of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon with his spear was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci for the debut of the Gold Sovereign following the Great Recoinage of 1816.
