Since 1964, the US Half Dollar has featured a depiction of President John F. Kennedy. The Kennedy Half Dollar is one of the more unique circulation coins in American history. It was the last to feature 90% silver content in circulation and the only one to use 40% silver content in circulation. Each 2024-D JFK Black Ruthenium Half Dollar Coin is a legal tender 50-cent piece with a curpo-nickel alloy. The coins have been enhanced with a layer of black ruthenium throughout the obverse and reverse sides, as well as selective 24-karat gold plating found only on the primary obverse and reverse design elements. These coins come with a capsule and a Certificate of Authenticity.
The JFK Half Dollar was quickly introduced by the US Mint following President Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963. Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of President John F. Kennedy, played a significant role in the design process. She reportedly expressed her preference for a simple, classical design for the coin, which influenced the final look of the half dollar.
The obverse of 2024-D JFK Half Dollar Coins features a left-profile bust of President John F. Kennedy. Gilroy Roberts was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1948 to 1964. Roberts designed the obverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar, featuring this bust of President John F. Kennedy.
On the reverse side of the 2024 JFK Black Ruthenium Half Dollars, you’ll find a modified image of the presidential seal. Frank Gasparro was the Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint during the creation of the Kennedy Half Dollar. He designed the reverse of the coin, depicting the eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace.
