In 2024, the United States Mint celebrates the anniversary of its first dollar coin design, an image almost as old as the mint itself. The US Mint was founded in 1792, and two years later in 1794, it introduced the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, the first Liberty-themed design from the sovereign mint of the United States of America. Today, 2024 1 oz US Mint 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medals are available at JM Bullion.
Medal Highlights:
The United States Mint introduced the Flowing Hair Dollar in October 1794, with the left-profile effigy having been created by the US Mint’s 1st Chief Engraver, Robert Scot. The coin was America’s first silver dollar and its first Liberty coin design. The mint would strike the coins in 1794 and 1795. The design was replaced after this two-year period by the Draped Bust Dollar, and today there are fewer than 150 of the original silver dollars.
All 2024 1 oz US Mint 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medals available here come in capsules with a themed presentation box from the United States Mint. The coins also come with a Certificate of Authenticity from the mint.
The obverse of the 2024 US Mint 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal features an effigy of Lady Liberty. This earliest design of Liberty for American coins shows Liberty with long, flowing hair and soft facial features. The design element includes 13 stars, the 2024 date mark, and a 230th-anniversary privy mark that may feature on select medals.
On the reverse of 2024 1 oz 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medals is a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Also originally designed in 1794 by Scot, the design shows a small bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread as it stands on a wreath of laurel. This design, like Flowing Liberty herself, was quickly replaced by the US Mint as Americans viewed it as not being a strong enough symbol for the new nation.
