The Zi:Sin, or 12 Guardians, are prominent figures in Korean mythology, representing various animals. The Zi:Sin originated from Chinese Taoism and were later incorporated into Korean mythology. They are believed to protect the country and its people from evil spirits and disasters. Draco, the guardian known as the Azure Dragon (Chung-ryong) in Korean mythology, is typically depicted as a blue dragon with four claws, representing the eastern direction.
The obverse of the 2024 South Korean Zi:Sin Draco Gold Medal comes with an image of Doggaebi. This figure is shown on the shield of Chiwoo Cheonwang. It is believed the God of War used the image of Doggaebi on his shield as a scare tactic toward his enemies. The hobgoblin-like figure is said to have the ability to ward off evil spirits and was once hung from the edge of roofs throughout Korea to provide protection for homes.
On the reverse side of 2024 1 oz Zi:Sin Draco Gold Medals, you will find the image of the dragon in flight. Draco, in the form of a warrior, is seated on the back of the dragon as it flies and he is shown drawing back an arrow with his bow.
