Tigers were once widely distributed throughout the Korean Peninsula, including both North and South Korea, as well as the neighboring regions of northeastern China and the Russian Far East. Since 2018, KOMSCO has featured the tiger in one of its prominent annual collections. The 2024 release marks the conclusion of this series with one final design. Tigers in Korea inhabited diverse habitats, including temperate forests, mixed woodlands, and mountainous regions. In this year’s particular design, the tiger is shown on Jeju Island in Hallasan National Park. The park contains the mountain peak of Hallasan, a shield volcano that serves as the highest peak in Korea at more than 6,300 feet.
On the obverse of 2024 South Korean Gold Tigers, you will find a depiction of the powerful tiger. This design captures the tiger in left-profile relief as it leaps from the foliage to attack its unseen prey. In the background, you’ll notice the lake that has formed in the crater of the shield volcano’s peak.
The reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Gold Tiger Medal comes with an image of the Korean peninsula. Rather than capturing the peninsula from a geopolitical perspective, the design shows the peninsula with the letters of the Korean alphabet filling in its outline. This design has been common to the series since its introduction in 2018.
