The African Wildlife Series has offered a beautiful depiction of the African leopard as part of its annual lineup since 2018. The coin follows the same roadmap set out by the African Wildlife Elephant collection a companion silver bullion series from the Bavarian State Mint in the African Wildlife Series. Coin Highlights:
African leopards have a sleek, golden-yellow coat covered with distinctive black rosettes. The underside is lighter, and the rosettes provide camouflage in their natural habitat. While the vast majority of leopards in the wild exhibit these physical characteristics in terms of coat color, there are exceptions.
There are two genetic mutations that can result in different coloration of the leopard. Melanism is a genetic mutation that causes an overproduction of melanin, resulting in a black or very dark coat. These leopards are commonly referred to as black panthers. The rosettes and spots are still present but are often difficult to see except under certain lighting conditions. Conversely, Albino leopards have a complete lack of pigmentation, resulting in white fur and pink eyes. This condition is extremely rare and often associated with health issues such as poor vision.
The obverse of the 2024 1 oz Silver African Wildlife Leopard comes with a depiction of the Somali coat of arms. This design features on all coins in the African Wildlife Series and shows a crowned shield with a field of horizontal lines and a single star at its center.
On the reverse of 2024 Somalia Silver African Wildlife Leopards, you will find an image of two leopards. In this design, an adult leopard is shown sitting next to its cub on a rocky outcrop. The gilded element is present on this side with the images of the adult and cub completed with a thin layer of 24-karat gold.
