Silver Krugerrands are named in honor of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger. Kruger was of Dutch descent and grew up on the South African frontier. He had limited formal education and worked as a farmer and ox-wagon driver in his early years. Kruger was part of the Voortrekker movement, which was a mass migration of Dutch-speaking settlers (Afrikaners) who left the British-controlled Cape Colony in the 1830s and 1840s to establish their own independent territories in the interior of southern Africa.
