The Flowing Hair Dollar, minted in 1794 and 1795, was the first official silver dollar issued by the United States federal government. The coin featured Liberty with flowing hair on the obverse, a design that embodied the young nation’s ideals of freedom, while the reverse displayed an eagle encircled by a wreath. Despite its short production run at the Philadelphia Mint, with only about 160,000 pieces struck in total, the Flowing Hair Dollar represented a crucial step in establishing America’s monetary independence
The obverse of the 2024 Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin features a right-profile effigy of Liberty created by Robert Scot. The design is so-named because Liberty has long, free-flowing hair. Robert Scot, who served as the first Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1793 until his death in 1823, was responsible for designing the Flowing Hair Dollar along with many other early American coins.
On the reverse of 2024 1 oz Proof Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coins is the original heraldic eagle design from the US Mint. It depicts a small eagle on a wreath that extends around it. These coins feature a historic edge-lettering of HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.
