The HMS Bounty is best known for the mutiny that occurred on April 28, 1789, led by Fletcher Christian against the ship's captain, Lieutenant William Bligh. This event has been popularized in numerous books, films, and other media. The Pitcairn Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the South Pacific Ocean. As of 2021, the population of Pitcairn Island was around 50 people, making it one of the least populous jurisdictions in the world. Most inhabitants are descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions.
The obverse of the 2024 Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coins features His Majesty King Charles III. This is the first-generation effigy of His Majesty and was designed by Glyn Davies. This left-profile relief depicts Charles III without a crown on his head. The switch to left-profile relief is common from one monarch to the next, with the lack of a crown common for male monarch portraits.
On the reverse of 2024 1 oz Silver Bounty Coins, you’ll find a depiction of the HMS Bounty. HMS Bounty was originally a merchant vessel named Bethia. The British Royal Navy purchased and refitted her in 1787 for a special mission to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and transport them to the West Indies.
