In the early 18th century, the Tuscarora came into conflict with European colonial settlers in the region, leading to the Tuscarora War from 1711 to 1715. After their defeat, the Tuscarora migrated northward and were accepted into the Iroquois Confederacy as the Sixth Nation in 1722. The remaining Tuscarora members settled around present-day Martinsburg, West Virginia.
