The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes. While the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians are based in Oklahoma, the Eastern Band maintains its sovereign government on the Qualla Boundary in North Carolina.
The Cherokee people have a deep historical connection to the Qualla Boundary region. Before European colonization, the Cherokee inhabited vast territories across the southeastern United States, including present-day North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and parts of Virginia and Kentucky.
In the obverse design of the 2024 1 oz Colorized NATB North Carolina Silver Coins, the mint features a depiction of a wooden carving by members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee near the Qualla Boundary. The US government built the Blue Ridge Parkway through 29 counties of Virginia and North Carolina between 1935 and 1940. The Eastern Cherokee resisted in giving up the right-of-way in the Qualla Boundary in exchanges for better compensation and assurances from the US government. This included the construction of what is now US Route 19 through the Soco Valley on tribal lands.
For the reverse side of 2024 Colorized Native America the Beautiful North Carolina Coins, you’ll find the common emblem of the series. The design element includes an American bald eagle at the center of an eight-pointed star with eight arrowheads spaced out between the individual points of the star.
These 2024 1 oz Colorized Native America the Beautiful North Carolina Silver Coins come with a capsule and a presentation display box. The box includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the Native American Mint. Each coin has colorized visuals that bring the obverse design to life.
