The Perth Mint’s major bullion issues each year focus on the native fauna of the Australian continent. Programs like the Australia Kookaburra and Australian Kangaroo have been available since 1990, but new programs like the Australian Emu bring even more diversity to the products offered by Perth Mint. Right now, 2024 1 oz Australian Gold Emu Coins are available at JM Bullion.

The Emu, or Dromaius novaehollandiae, is the second-largest living bird by height, after its ratite relative, the ostrich. Native to Australia, this flightless bird is an iconic part of the continent’s fauna and has significant cultural importance to Indigenous Australians. Emus can grow up to 6.2 feet in height and weigh between 66 to 99 pounds.
His Majesty King Charles III is on the obverse of 2024 Australian Gold Emus. This is the first appearance of Charles III in this program, with this left-profile relief depicting His Majesty without a crown. Dan Thorne is the creator of this first-ever Australian bust of King Charles III.
An Emu is featured in the reverse design of the 2024 1 oz Gold Emu Coin. Characterized by their long necks, long legs, and soft, brown feathers, emus are well-adapted to the varied Australian landscape. They have small wings relative to their body size, which are vestigial and not used for flight. Instead, emus are excellent runners, capable of reaching speeds up to 31 mph and covering great distances in search of food and water.
