Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty debuted in 1907 on the $20 Double Eagle. After disappearing from American coinage in 1933 following the end of gold coining in the United States, it was revived and reintroduced on the obverse of 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins in 1986.
The obverse of the 2024 American Gold Eagle features that iconic image of Lady Liberty. When this image of Liberty’s figure in front-facing relief debuted in 1907, it was considered a groundbreaking change in the visuals of Lady Liberty for American coinage. It depicts her full-length figure walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse of 2024 1 oz Gold Eagle Coins, you will find a modern depiction of the American bald eagle. The design shown here was created in 2020 by Jennie Norris and debuted on the coins in mid-2021. In this visual, the head of the bald eagle is set in left-profile relief with intricate details for its physical characteristics.
