All Mexican Libertads have shared obverse and reverse designs. The ornate reverse includes a view of the Mexican Independence Victory Column, with its statue of Winged Victory, and the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The mountains are two of Mexico’s most iconic volcanoes, located southeast of Mexico City. These majestic peaks have played significant roles in Mexican culture, history, and geology for thousands of years. Popocatépetl, often referred to as “Popo,” is an active volcano standing at 5,426 meters (17,802 feet) above sea level, while Iztaccíhuatl, nicknamed “Izta,” is a dormant volcanic mountain reaching 5,230 meters (17,160 feet).
On the obverse of the 2024 Mexican Silver Libertad is the national coat of arms. The modern emblem of Mexico is based on an Aztec symbol from the 1524 Codex Mendoza. The seal includes a golden eagle in left-profile relief that is battling a snake on the perch of a prickly pear cactus.
The reverse side of the 2024 1/20 oz Silver Libertad Coin comes with the aforementioned visuals. Winged Victory is visible in the foreground in three-quarter relief with a laurel wreath raised overhead in her right hand and a set of broken chains at her side in her left hand. The mountain peaks are visible in the distant background.
