Introduced in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad coin series didn’t cement itself as an annual product of the Mexican Mint until 2002. Its patchwork history prior to that point included the debut of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins in 1981, followed by 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins in 1991. The latter of those final two is the smallest in the series. Today, 2024 1/20 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Gold Libertad coins were introduced in 1981 and featured the exact designs, initially, that the Mexican Mint used in 1921 with the release of the 50 Peso Gold Centenario coin. The latter issue was in honor of the centennial of national independence from Spain. The Gold Libertad features modern versions of the national seal and Winged Victory as of the 2000 release of the coins.
All 2024 1/20 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins offered here come with a plastic flip for delivery and arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Since its debut in 1991, the 1/20 oz Gold Libertad has seen peaks and valleys in demand. The highest mintage recorded came in 1992 when 65,225 coins were sold, while the lowest mintage recorded to date was 650 coins in 2013. This does not include the canceled 2012 release of fractional-ounce coins.
On the obverse of 2024 Mexican Gold Libertads, the national coat of arms of Mexico is featured. The modern seal of Mexico can trace its design inspiration back to 1524 and the Codex Mendoza, an Aztec codex that featured the image of an eagle on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake. This same symbolism is present on the modern seal.
The reverse side of the 2024 1/20 oz Gold Libertad Coin comes with an image of the statue of Winged Victory. This angelic symbol of Mexican Independence is captured here as it seen from the center of modern-day Mexico City. Winged Victory stands atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distant background.
