Proof Mexican Gold Libertads debuted in 1983, but coins were only issued twice in this series during its first 19 years in existence. The first issue in 1983 featured only a 1 oz gold coin, with the 1989 issue coming next and featuring only a 1/2 oz gold coin. The first issue of a 1/2 oz Proof Gold Libertad came in 1989 when just 704 coins were issued. Since then, the coin has been issued annually starting with the 2004 release and has featured low mintages in most years. The highest mintage recorded came in 2016 with 2,100 coins struck, while the lowest to date is the 2004 release with just 200 coins struck.
For the obverse of 2024 Proof Mexican Gold Libertads, you will find the Mexican coat of arms. The national emblem of Mexico is inspired by an Aztec symbol from the Codex Mendoza in 1524. The seal features a Golden eagle in left-profile relief as it sits perched on a prickly pear cactus and battles with a serpent.
In the reverse design of the 2024 1/2 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin, the mint offers a glimpse of the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Set atop this column, you’ll find the image of Winged Victory with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl on the horizon in the distance.
