Reindeer have become inextricably linked with Christmas iconography, largely due to their association with Santa Claus’s flying sleigh. This connection can be traced back to the 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”) by Clement Clarke Moore, which first introduced the concept of Santa’s reindeer-drawn sleigh. Today, 2024 1/2 Gram Proof Congo Gold Christmas Reindeer Coins are available from JM Bullion.

In Moore’s poem, he named eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, was a much later addition, created in 1939 by Robert L. May for a Montgomery Ward department store promotional booklet. The choice of reindeer as Santa’s transportation likely stems from their association with northern climates and their domestication by Arctic peoples.
