Mexican Gold Libertad Coins can draw a direct line of heritage to the 1921 Gold Centenario issued by the Mexican Mint. The latter coin was introduced to honor the centennial of Mexican independence, and 60 years after its debut, the Mexican Mint revived those images for use on the new gold bullion Mexican Libertad. The coins are packaged in plastic flips for delivery and represent the second-smallest coin in the series. The Gold Libertad comes in five weights ranging from 1 oz gold to 1/20 oz gold, with four fractional-ounce coins in total.
The 1/10 oz Gold Libertad debuted in 1991 and, like the other coins, has a rocky early history. Gold Libertads debuted in 1981 in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold, but weren’t issued again until 1991. This release added the 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz weights, with all five coins issued until 1994. Subsequent production occurred in 2000, and then became an annual program in 2002.
On the obverse of 2024 Mexican Gold Libertads, you will find a depiction of the modern coat of arms of Mexico. The seal is shown at the center with its powerful golden eagle in left-profile relief as it sits atop a prickly pear cactus and battles with a serpent. The design of the seal is rooted in Aztec history as the Aztecs were told to build their capital city where they encountered an eagle devouring a snake.
The reverse side of the 2024 1/10 oz Gold Libertad Coin comes with a vision of Winged Victory. This statue is a symbol that dates back to the Mexican resistance leading up to and during the revolution against Spanish imperial control. Winged Victory is shown here atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column and holds a laurel crown in one hand with broken chains in the other.
