The Australian Koala Series is one of Perth Mint’s primary bullion coin collections. Introduced in silver in 2007, this long-running collection features new reverse depictions of the native marsupial each year. Each 2024 1/10 oz Australian Platinum Koala Coin offered here comes in a protective plastic capsule. The Perth Mint has a limited mintage of the 1/10 oz platinum coin, with no more than 15,000 coins available to investors. Talented Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong, famous for her Lunar Series designs for the mint, created the visuals found on the reverse of 2024 Platinum Koalas.
Koalas have a fascinating evolutionary history that dates back millions of years in Australia. Fossil records suggest that koala-like marsupials first appeared during the Oligocene epoch, approximately 25-30 million years ago. These ancient ancestors were more diverse than today’s single surviving koala species, with several different lineages evolving across the Australian continent.
The obverse of the 2024 Australian Platinum Koala Coin features a depiction of His Majesty King Charles III. This effigy was created in 2024 by Dan Thorne and depicts the King without a crown. This left-profile relief is the first-generation portrait of Charles III to grace Australian coins.
On the reverse of 2024 1/10 oz Platinum Koalas, you’ll find a depiction of the namesake marsupial. This design shows the koala climbing the trunk of a gum tree as it looks back over its shoulder.
