When the American Silver Eagle debuted in 1986, the San Francisco Mint was responsible for the production of both the BU and Proof Silver Eagles. The last time the San Francisco Mint annually produced the Proof Silver Eagle was 1992. As of 2018, annual production has resumed at San Francisco as a supplement to the production of West Point Mint Proof Silver Eagles. Each of the 2023-S 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins available here comes with individual packaging from the United States Mint. The coins are encapsulated and presented in blue boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity included from the US Mint. These proof coins have frosted designs and lettering that stand out against the mirrored fields.
The San Francisco Mint originally issued Proof Silver Eagles from 1986 to 1992. With a few exceptions, San Francisco did not issue Proof Silver Eagles again until 2018. Though there is not always an initial mintage limit set, the San Francisco Mint Proof Silver Eagles tend to have lower mintages than the West Point Mint Proof Silver Eagles.
The obverse of 2023-S Proof American Silver Eagles comes with a depiction of Liberty known as Walking Liberty. This design was created in 1916 for the US half dollar and shows Liberty’s full-length figure in left-profile relief with the American flag draped around her figure and her right hand extended toward the sun on the horizon.
On the reverse side of 2023-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle Coins, you will find the modernized image of the American bald eagle. Created by Emily Damstra in 2020, it shows the eagle swooping down with extended wings and its talons clutching a large oak branch.
