The Peace Silver Dollar was first issued in December 1921 to mark the achievement of peace following the end of World War I. The coin was designed by Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci and introduced a new artistic direction for US silver dollars. His design presented a bold image of Liberty inspired by his wife, Teresa, portrayed with flowing hair and a radiant tiara that symbolized hope and renewal. In 2021, the US Mint reintroduced the Peace Dollar as a commemorative silver bullion release struck in .999 pure silver to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original coin’s debut. The obverse of the 2023 Peace Dollar Coin displays a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. This design replaced the Morgan Dollar portrait that had been used during the late 1800s and early 1900s, offering a more modern interpretation of Liberty. The spiked crown worn by Liberty is designed to resemble rays of sunlight, symbolizing a new era of peace. Teresa de Francisci served as the inspiration for Liberty’s likeness, continuing the legacy of the original artist’s personal influence.

The reverse of the 2023 Peace Silver Dollar Coin depicts a bald eagle perched calmly on a rock bearing the inscription “PEACE.” The eagle grips an olive branch in its talons, reinforcing the message of reconciliation and stability. Rays of sunlight rise from the lower portion of the design, echoing the obverse symbolism. This revised reverse design was intended to reflect the sacrifices of World War I and the lasting importance of the peace that followed.
