First introduced in 1876, the Morgan Silver Dollar revived silver dollar production in the US following a brief pause. It replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar and remained in production from 1878 through 1904, with a final issue in 1921. The coin takes its name from George T. Morgan, the designer behind both its obverse and reverse. Morgan joined the US Mint in 1878 as an engraver and was later appointed Chief Engraver in 1917, a role he held until 1925 under President Woodrow Wilson.
On the obverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty appears in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap, adorned with a coronet and a laurel wreath—symbols of freedom and honor.
