In an unexpected revival, Morgan Silver Dollar production resumed in 1921 under the Pittman Act, which required the striking of millions of silver dollars to replace those melted down and sold to Great Britain during World War I. This single-year comeback produced over 86 million coins across three mints, making 1921 Morgan dollars among the most common dates for collectors today, before the design was permanently retired in favor of the new Peace Dollar later that same year.

This design presents the American bald eagle facing forward with its wings spread wide, holding arrows of war and an olive branch of peace in its talons. Morgan’s interpretation of the eagle does not include the U.S. national shield, setting it apart from later federal seal designs.
