On the reverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar Coin, the US Mint uses George T. Morgan’s original heraldic eagle design. The image depicts a front-facing bald eagle with its wings fully extended, holding an olive branch to symbolize peace and arrows representing military strength. Unlike the modern Great Seal of the United States, Morgan’s eagle design does not include a national shield.
Morgan Silver Dollar production came to an end in 1904 when the government’s mandated silver purchases were finally exhausted after more than two decades of steady coinage. The cessation marked the conclusion of an era dominated by Western silver mining interests and their influence on American monetary policy, leaving behind millions of Morgan dollars that had circulated throughout the nation’s commerce during the final quarter of the nineteenth century and the opening years of the twentieth.
