After a century-long absence from American currency, two of the nation’s most popular historic coin designs returned in 2021. To mark the centennial of the first-ever Peace Silver Dollar and the last-ever Morgan Silver Dollar, the US Mint revived these designs on silver bullion coins. Each 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar 2-Coin Set comes with coins that are individually housed in plastic slabs. Mint State 70 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no detractions. The First Strike designation indicates coins that were received for grading by the PCGS within 30 days of release by the mint.
Historically, the Morgan Silver Dollar enjoyed a longer run than the Peace Silver Dollar. The former was issued from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921 as the US Mint resumed silver dollar coining. The latter was issued from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.
In the obverse design of the coins in the 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar Set, you’ll find two distinct images of Liberty. The Morgan Dollar features a classic depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief with the coronet crown, laurel wreath, and Phrygian cap on her head. The Peace Dollar has a more modern image that captures Liberty with free-flowing hair as she wears a crown of light.
For the reverse design element of the 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, you’ll again find two different images depicting the American bald eagle. The Morgan Dollar features the bald eagle as part of the heraldic eagle seal, while the Peace Dollar captures a bald eagle at rest on a rock as the sun rises on the edge of the coin field.
