The Knights of Malta, officially known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta, is a Catholic military order with a rich history. In 2021, Germania Mint introduced a series known as Knights of the Past that celebrates the history of the Knights of Malta. The order was founded in the 11th century in Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades. It was initially established as a hospitaller organization to provide care for sick and injured pilgrims to the Holy Land.
All 2023 2 oz Antique Malta Silver Knights of the Past Coins are available in clear, acrylic glass displays with a wooden base. There is a Certificate of Authenticity available with each coin. The coins themselves have an antique polish throughout with the armor of the lead Maltese knight on the obverse gilded in 24-karat gold.
On the obverse of 2023 Antique Malta Silver Knights of the Past Coins, you’ll find Maltese knights in formation standing in front of the Valetta watchtower. The field also includes the headquarters of the Order of Malta as the knights besiege Fort Saint Angel in Birgu.
